The Shepherd's Marathon

The SJA shepherd's marathon has begun for 2017!  He's showing his age but will try to run around the neighborhood again this year, starting at the Kid Kare Building.  Here's the first part of his message:

Our shepherd hastens to bring hope                                                                                               With Adidas on his feet                                                                                                                     Glad tidings he delivers                                                                                                                    To all friends  and neighbors he meets!

Dear Friends,

A happy and blessed Advent to you.

I’d like to invite you, especially young members of the SJA community, to a casual Christmas gathering after the 4:30pm Mass next Saturday, December 9 in the school cafeteria/parish center. Visions, the SJA Young Adult Group, will host the event with food, beverages, games for the kids and adults. I’d like to personally invite the young families and single people of the parish. And don’t forget your festive Christmas sweater! Here’s the announcement that appeared on the parish web site and facebook page:

"Are you looking for the perfect opportunity to break out your newest Christmas sweater? Visions Young Adult group invites you to join in an evening of fellowship at our 1st annual Christmas Party. This event will be after 4:30 mass on Saturday, December 9th in the South City Catholic Academy cafeteria. Join fellow parishioners of all ages in celebrating the advent season with Visions final event of the 2017 year! Pizza and beverages will be provided along with fun Christmas themed activities for kids and those who are kids at heart this time of year. We hope all are able to join us in celebrating a great 2017 and don't forget to dress festive! Contact parishioner Nate Kulla with questions at kullanate@yahoo.com"

Our Advent Holy Hours continue again this year: each Monday of Advent in church from 7-8pm: Eucharistic Adoration, guided meditation, and Benediction at 8pm. We’ll have additional priests for the Sacrament of Reconciliation on Monday, December 11 from 7-8pm.

Know that you are loved dearly and prayed for daily.

Pastor's Column for Nov 5, 2017

Dear Friends,

This weekend we welcome Father Paul Rothschild and Father Mike Lydon to St. Joan of Arc in a “pulpit exchange” with St. Dominic Savio parish. Fr. Rothschild is pastor at St. Dominic Savio and was a professor of mine at the seminary.  Fr. Lydon is President of Bishop Dubourg High School and is in-residence at St. Dominic. I’ll be preaching the Masses at St. Dominic Savio this weekend. Frs. Rothschild and Lydon are brother priests and good friends- we welcome them to SJA!

Some have asked about how the Homecoming did, financially. We’re still paying bills so we don’t have a final number yet.  As soon as we can, we’ll publish the final report.

My thanks to you for responding to my invitation to use the Scrip Program for regular purchases. We are already seeing an increase in the rebate to the parish- so THANK YOU!  Let’s keep it going!

And finally, we hold in prayer this month our second graders who are preparing to receive their First Reconciliation on Tuesday, November 14.  Along with our friends from Our Lady of Sorrows, we’ll celebrate this sacrament with them as they prepare to receive their First Communion in the spring. We hold and support them in prayer!

Know that you are loved dearly and prayed for daily.

Peace and prayers for you

Fr. Craig

Source Material - The Wedding Garment

At our Masses this past weekend we heard about the Wedding Garment as a 'prerequisite' to enter the wedding banquet (a.k.a. Heaven). During the homily I tried to explain how this wedding garment has to do with Christian Baptism, identity and a life of virtue and good works.  I wanted to share this paragraph from some source material that I used in preparing to preach. The paragraph comes from Fire of Mercy, Heart of the Word, Vol. 3 by Erasmo Leiva-Merikakis. It is published by Ignatius Press.

"At crucial moments in Jesus' life (the Baptism and the Transfiguration), the Father's voice resounds from heaven and utters the very same words: 'This is my one dear Son, in him I take great delight'(3:17, 17:5, NET). It seems the Father has nothing else to say to use but this. And this is more than enough because, if Jesus is his only begotten Son, and if it is in Jesus that the Father takes all his delight, it is clear that we must come to resemble Jesus as closely as possible if we, too, are to be a source of the Father's delight. Our own salvation and bliss consist in nothing else but entering, in Jesus, into the same relationship with the Father that he himself enjoys"(523).

And finally, we remember our point for prayer: "Remember who we are; remember who loves us; and then do whatever we (and the Father) wants!"

Have a good week and see you around the ranch!

Eucharistic Adoration at SCCA/SJA

Eucharistic Adoration ~ A personal invitation to spend time with Jesus.

The Students at South City Catholic Academy would like to invite you to spend time praying with us on Wednesday, November 1 at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church. The Blessed Sacrament will be exposed directly after the All School Mass that morning and will conclude with Benediction at 2:50pm.

Saint John XXIII, Pope (1958 – 1963), who made a daily Holy Hour before the Blessed Sacrament, reminds us on the importance of Eucharistic Adoration, "In the Blessed Sacrament a heavenly school is open to you, with the best teacher one can possibly imagine, Jesus Christ himself."

Come prayer with us – we will be praying for you.
